Building Design for Animals
Windsong Veterinary Hospital: A Design Built for Wellness
An award-winning facility that balances client-centric care and employee wellness with an efficient, comforting environment for animal patients. The project stands as a testament to the success of a vision-driven approach.
BDA Architecture is proud to announce that the Windsong Veterinary Hospital project has been honored with a 2025 Hospital Design360 Competition Merit Award in the 3,500 to 8,000 square feet category, presented by dvm360.com. This award recognizes the exceptional design and thoughtful execution of a new veterinary facility that blends warmth and comfort with high-quality medical functionality.
Windsong Veterinary Hospital, a general practice completed in April 2024, was a new build project for a doctor with a clear vision: to create a hospital that combined the efficiency of corporate medicine with the personal touch of a private practice. Located on a prominent corner in Prosper, Texas, the new hospital replaces a building where the practice had operated for over two decades.
The collaborative design-build effort by BDA Architecture and our sister-company, CMP, Inc., seamlessly integrated the client's vision into every phase. The result is a facility that perfectly balances client-centric care, employee wellness, and a high-quality, comforting environment for animal patients.
Intentional Design for Patient and Staff Wellness
The hospital's design is a reflection of the practice's commitment to compassionate care and a positive experience for both clients and staff. The BDA team focused on creating a building that was not only professional and inviting but also highly efficient. Clear sight lines from the central treatment area to all major support zones allow for seamless staff workflow and constant patient monitoring.
Natural light was a key component of the design, with large windows and three oversized skylights that flood the interior with daylight. This abundance of natural light creates a welcoming atmosphere and is known to improve the well-being and morale of both patients and the veterinary team.
The project features a full suite of modern amenities, including:
- Four exam rooms, including a dedicated feline-only room and a comfort room for difficult conversations and compassionate end of life care.
- Separate wards for canine and feline patients to minimize stress.
- A centralized "Fishbowl" treatment monitoring station with 360-degree visibility.
- Sterile surgery suite with natural daylight, a pass-through cabinet and HEPA filtration.
- Dedicated spaces for dental procedures, imaging, and a lab/pharmacy.
- A dedicated isolation ward with its own ventilation system to prevent infectious disease transmission.
Thoughtful Features That Make a Difference
Every detail of Windsong Veterinary Hospital was intentionally planned to enhance the experience. The hospital's design includes features that reduce stress and noise, such as sound-dampening ceiling tiles, solid-core doors, and slow-close cabinetry. For grieving families, the comfort room provides a private exit, allowing them to leave without re-entering the main lobby. A turfed outdoor yard allows canine patients an outdoor space to relax and relieve themselves.
A key innovation is the "Fishbowl"—the centrally located DVM office with wrap-around glass windows. This design allows the veterinarian to oversee the ICU, surgery, and treatment areas from a single vantage point, fostering collaboration and ensuring the doctor is always connected to patient care.
BDA Architecture and CMP, Inc. are proud to have partnered with Windsong Veterinary Hospital, bringing to life a vision that prioritizes comfort, efficiency, and exceptional care. This Merit Award is a testament to the thoughtful and intentional design that defines the hospital.
