New Beginnings: Kershaw County Humane Society
As an animal care architect, BDA's work isn't limited to just design. When teaming with a non-profit organization on their new adoption center, BDA provided services beyond the "look" of the building, helping them get to where they needed to be to make their shelter project a success.
When the Kershaw County Humane Society needed to transform an existing empty metal building into a modern, welcoming adoption space, they partnered with BDA Architecture to bring the Thiel Meyer Pet Adoption Center in Camden, South Carolina to life.
The resulting 11,349-square-foot renovation is a vibrant, healthy, and highly functional facility capable of caring for up to 250 pets at a time.
Part Partner, Part Architect: Fundraising for Success
Before the transformation from empty metal shell into bright new shelter could begin, the project required a robust community fundraising effort to secure its budget. BDA stepped in as a true partner early in the process, developing comprehensive, high-impact fundraising materials. By creating vivid, professional design renderings and a polished brochure pamphlet, BDA gave the Humane Society the visual tools they needed to share their vision dynamically, successfully securing crucial community donations that made the project possible.
Smart Architecture: Balancing Budget and Vision
Like many non-profit projects, navigating budget constraints required creative architectural solutions. The facility was originally envisioned as a much larger footprint. When initial costs threatened to outpace the budget, BDA meticulously scaled down the overall design.
Rather than cutting vital spaces, the design team engineered a high-efficiency layout that retained all of the Humane Society's high-priority needs within a smaller, cost-effective footprint. BDA strategically incorporated separate public entrances for the adoption center, surrender/animal control, and the spay/neuter clinic—maximizing operational flow and safety without compromising on the project's core mission.
Key Design Highlights & Exceptional Features
The completed Thiel Meyer Pet Adoption Center moves far beyond the traditional shelter model, replacing wire cages with a bright, welcoming environment:
- The Indoor "Street": An innovative central public pathway that invites visitors to tour a diverse variety of pet adoption rooms, showcasing everything from puppies and adult dogs to exotic birds and reptiles.
- Low-Stress Cat Housing: Felines enjoy a dedicated, quiet zone completely isolated from the sight and sound of active dogs. This area features spacious indoor/outdoor congregate housing and a screened-in porch for cats to sunbathe safely.
- Tempered-Glass Kennels: Used on both indoor and outdoor runs, these glass enclosures offer clear, unobstructed views of adoptable dogs, boosting adoption rates while maximizing natural light.
- Advanced Clinical Spaces: The facility includes a modern surgical suite for on-site veterinary care and high-volume spay/neuter services, alongside a dedicated grooming room, and quarantine/isolation areas for medical intake.
- Enrichment & Comfort: The design integrates real grass outdoor play yards for canine exercise, private consultation rooms for families, and beautiful artwork throughout to create a deeply positive experience for visitors and staff alike.
